In the world today, the prices of fuel determine the costs of production to a large extent. Due to this factor, the invention of diesel as an efficient and cost-effective fuel has played a big role in the success of the automotive and generator industries. Apart from cutting the costs, diesel has had the following advantages to the two industries.
Diesel has enabled the automotive and generator industries to produce better models of engines especially those which produce less noise and require less maintenance. In the past, engines which used standard fuels produced higher noise and their maintenance costs were very expensive. Additionally, Diesel engines also have longer life spans than those of standard fuels. This is because gas units require too much heat for combustion, unlike diesel units. Diesel fuels are very common in place of haulage trucks and particularly diesel generators where a lot of generator hire or leasing services take place
Diesel operated generators and engines also operate for longer hours as compared to identical engines that use standard fuels. For example, a 1800rpm diesel engine can function for 500-1250 days without any significant maintenance while an identical engine using standard fuel can only operate for 250-417 days before service.
WHY DIESEL TRUCKS AND GENERATORS ARE COST EFFECTIVE AS OPPOSED TO STANDARD FUELS.
It is more cost effective to use diesel in trucks and generators as opposed to standard fuels because of a number of reasons. Due to the decrease in the supply and rise in demand for fuels, their prices have escalated. However, diesel is the cheapest fuel and thus a reliable option for many. Despite the high cost of diesel propelled trucks and generators, diesel has a higher energy density meaning that it produces much energy than that produced by the same amount of standard fuels. Therefore, diesel trucks and generators are more efficient than those using standard fuels.
Secondly, diesel trucks and diesel generators do not require wires and spark plugs as is the case for engines that use standard fuels. This cuts the cost used for maintenance. Additionally, due to the reduction of such appliances in the engines, diesel engines tend to last longer than their counterparts. The absence of spark plugs also means that diesel trucks and generators are safe from freak fires. This is not the case for those that use standard fuels. Diesel trucks and generators thus save owners the costs of putting safety measures to curb risks of fire.
THE INVENTION AND PRODUCTION OF DIESEL.
Diesel was invented by Rudolf Diesel in 1890s during when the steam engine was the only source of power for large-scale industries. Diesel was brought into production between the year 1893 and 1897 when he collaborated with Maschinenfabrik-Augsburg-Nurnberg (M.A.N) and Sulzer Brothers of Switzerland. M.A.N carried out the first test in 1893 but was unsuccessful. On February 17, 1897, a major achievement was seen after Diesel registered an efficiency of 26.2 %. This led to the construction of the first diesel engine by Sulzer in June 1898.
For the diesel invention to become successful commercially, many developers and engineers had to be brought on board. This however created frustrations for Rudolf Diesel due disagreements with new members. in 1913, it was assumed that he committed suicide after his attempts to market the engines failed. Other companies took charge of the invention and developed it further making it a reliable source of power today.
